Danvers Merger Strengthens Seed, Service

A strong seed program made stronger for customers of both companies is just one of the benefits that came from the merger with Danvers Farmers Elevator. Darren Roelfs, who managed the seed program at Danvers since it began in 1999, says customers will appreciate the expanded seed choices.

“The brands we carried at Danvers—DEKALB®/Asgrow®, LG™, Credenz® and Wyffels®—will be available to United Prairie customers, while farmers in the Danvers area will gain access to Stine® and NK® seed,” states Darren. “We should have something to meet the need of any customer who wants to purchase seed.”

Danvers Farmers Elevator became part of the United Prairie ownership group earlier this year. Darren, a certified crop advisor, notes that they provide a full range of seed and agronomy services to customers within a 40-mile radius of Danvers. He believes that the merger will further improve their level of service.

“We have more resources available for our customers,” Darren says. “There is a full-time agronomist on staff, and more locations that enable us to share personnel and equipment during the peak seasons.”

A pleasant surprise

That’s how Darren describes corn yields in his area. “We had a wet, cold snap in late April for about two weeks, and corn that was planted April 20-23 encountered stand issues,” he says. “We had more replants north of Route 24, and replanting proved to be the right decision. Corn yields overall proved to be good—better than you might expect. Bean yields were off a couple of bushels from what we saw last year.

“One thing we definitely noticed this growing season was the impact of a foliar fungicide and insecticide application on soybeans,” he continues. “We target the R3 stage for application, and that treatment resulted in a 6-9-bushel yield increase locally. That’s definitely something to look at going forward.”
